Why You Should Stop Setting Goals and Establish Systems Instead: how to actually achieve your goals using systems.

Most of us are GREAT at setting goals…but not-so-great at establishing the systems needed to achieve them. What’s the difference? Goals should be used as a guide to show you where you want to go, but systems are the roadmap that helps you make incremental progress toward it.

If you’ve set a goal in the past and then failed to make progress, I’m willing to bet that you didn’t establish a system to support it.

Let’s look at some examples of transforming your goals🎯 –> into systems🔃.

🎯GOAL: Improve my health.
🔃SYSTEM: Using a habit tracker to build consistency with hydration, movement, and nutrition. I’ll set it as a designated browser tab so it opens each day when I start my web browser.

🎯GOAL: Strengthen my professional network.
🔃SYSTEM: I’ll use my calendar to block off 1-hour every Wednesday afternoon, so I have time to schedule a coffee date to network with a mentor or peer and will set a recurring weekly reminder to arrange the meet-up.

🎯GOAL: Read 12 books this year.
🔃SYSTEM: I’ll remove the TV from my bedroom, purchase a new reading light, and place my book on top of my pillow after making my bed each morning to encourage reading for 20 minutes each night.

🎯GOAL: Average 600 sales per month in my online shop.
🔃SYSTEM: I’ll use Microsoft To-Do to create recurring tasks for the content I know drives sales and do those each once a week for the next six months.

🎯GOAL: Become proficient in Spanish.
🔃SYSTEM: I’ll clear my schedule from 12:40-1:20 PM daily and set a push notification on my phone for my language learning app, Memrise.

Is this an area you need help in? I have two things that can help:

1 – The Habit Tracker! This Google Sheet will help you identify and track up to 15 habits per month to help you move toward goals in any aspect of your life. Download it, and you’ll get my 5-minute video tutorial for how to set it up and create consistency with it (I have the best hack for this!). It is always dated 12 months from the month of purchase, so you can start using it at any time.

2. My Systems + Efficiency Group Course, Thyme Transformation! You’ll learn how to establish strong systems that support four key areas of your life: Projects, Schedule, Research, and Execution. You’ll learn not only how to set them up, but also how to maintain them for the long term. The next session begins February 13th. Join the waitlist here.

Learning notes: I first learned the concept of Goals vs. Systems in Scott Adams’ book How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big. The idea is expanded on by James Clear in his book Atomic Habits (one of my favs).
