Wanna know my secret for balancing work + wellness?

say hello to my secret weapon

In my opinion, there is no such thing as “Iced Coffee Season”. I prefer cold brew coffee year-round, and today I’m going to tell you how to make it at home. If you have a French Press it is super simple, but you can also do it using a jar and a fine strainer or piece of cheesecloth.

Cold brew coffee is 60% less acidic than coffee that is brewed with heat, which makes it much easier on your teeth and digestion. I also had a little chat with a barista on Instagram this week, who explained that a coarse-ground coffee will also result in an even less acidic coffee, thanks to the decreased time in the grinder. Here’s my process for making cold brew at home, and if you scroll down I’ve also shared a recipe for my everyday iced coffee latte using Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides for a little dose of nutrients.

What You Need

A French Press (or jar + strainer/cheesecloth)
1.5 cups (4 oz) coarse ground coffee
3 cups cold water

Directions

To make the cold brew simply combine 1 1/2 (4 oz) of coarse ground coffee with 3 cups of cold water. Pour the water over slowly, and then stir to make sure all the grounds are combined with the water. Put the cover on the French Press (or the lid on the jar). If you’re using a French Press do not press it, keep it in the “up” position (as pictured below). Store it in the fridge for 14-16 hours. Take out, press (or strain), and then pour the coffee concentrate into a jar or bottle for storage. What you’ve created now is a coffee concentrate and you’ll want to combine it 1:1 with water when you serve it. You can serve it black over ice, or dress it up however you prefer your coffee.

Pro tip: try making ice cubes out of your cold brew! That way as your ice melts your coffee doesn’t get watered down. If you don’t have coffee cubes ready, you can reduce your ratio a bit 1.5:1, so that the melting ice actually benefits your brew.

ICED COLD BREW COLLAGEN LATTE

What you Need

Hand frother (or a whisk or jar with lid)
4 ounces cold brew concentrate
4 ounces cold water
Oat Milk
100% Pure Maple Syrup
Cinnamon (optional)
Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides (optional)
Ice (optional)

Directions

In a tall (16 oz) glass, combine your cold brew concentrate and cold water. Stir or froth it together to combine. Add your ice cubes. In a separate cup or jar combine 3 oz oat milk, 1 tsp maple syrup, 1 scoop Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides, and a dash of cinnamon. Froth until it is whipped and fluffy. If you don’t have a frother you can whisk this mixture or shake it in a lidded jar. Pour the oat milk froth over the iced coffee and enjoy!

The Collagen Peptides are a totally optional addition to this recipe. They are unflavored and not having them won’t alter the flavor or texture of your drink. I try to take collagen every day, as it’s great for our hair, skin, nails, and joints! It’s also a good source of protein, so adding 1 scoop to your coffee adds 10 grams of collagen and 9 grams of protein to your morning coffee. Their Lavender Lemon Beauty Water is my other favorite (I like it plain over ice, or mixed into smoothies or Agua Fresca) Place your order for Vital Proteins through my link and you’ll get $10 off.
